The annual convocation of Combined Chapters of Central Essex was held at
Howard Hall, Braintree on Friday 25th April 2003 and this year was hosted by
Walden Chapter No 1280. During the meeting a short history of Walden Chapter was given by E.Comp. Jack H. Golding (Scribe E) and this was followed by a lecture by E.Comp. J.C. Scott (Z) entitled 'The Aftermath of the Fire at Freemasons' Hall, Saffron Walden'. Ex.Comp 'Cass' Scott incorporated photographic slides with his very informative script to get across to those who had not seen the devastation facing Saffron Walden Masons at the time of the fire. He then went on to show how the Freemasons' Hall was resurrected from the ashes. |

The proceeds from the sale of the updated booklet 'A Brief History of Freemasonry in Saffron Walden 1869-2001', produced by Ex.Comp. Ian Greig, was to be donated to the Lodge of Discovery at Port Vila, capital of the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu. They had also recently lost their Temple by fire, as was highlighted in the 'Freemasonry Today' article, page 13 Spring 2003 Issue 24: 'Vanuatu: Lodge Destroyed by Fire' (Freemasonry Today - Web Site) |
